SIIM 2007 Hot Topic Sessions

Back to Educational Program

Invited speakers and key thought leaders present in-depth, specialized learning opportunities on cutting-edge and timely topics.

New at SIIM 2007!

Hot Topic Breakout Sessions

To provide further opportunity for attendees to ask questions of speakers or pursue a specific follow-up area of interest, Breakout Sessions have been added to Hot Topic sessions 1, 3 and 9 this year. Following the 1 1/2-hour session, an informal, 1 hour breakout session will be held for those interested in participating. The sessions will facilitate networking and accessibility to speakers for these Hot Topics.

Hot Topic Session 1
Thursday, June 7
10:15 am - 11:45 am
Ballroom E
Procedure Room Workflow
Chair:
Neil J. Halin, DO
Tufts New England Medical Center
Participants:
Keith M. Horton, MD
Washington Hospital Center
Steven C. Horii, MD
University of Pennsylvania Health System
Description: This session will discuss the current state of workflow in both the Interventional Suite (Interventional Radiology/Cardiology) and its environment including information gathering, patient scheduling, results presentation and reporting. HI-IQ will be presented as an example of a practice coordination tool.  We will also discuss workflow optimization in the OR.  Possible future enhancements to the interventional environment will be presented integrating information gathering and data presentation in the IR suite.

Hot Topic Session 2
Thursday, June 7
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Ballroom E
Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs)
Chair:
Adam E. Flanders, MD
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Participant:
Elliott D. Menschik, MD, PhD
Hx Technologies, Inc.
David S. Channin, MD
Northwestern University Medical School
Description: Physician access to historic medical data is essential in providing quality care and, in some cases, may directly reduce the number of ordered duplicative procedures or tests (e.g. imaging studies). Traditional methods for accessing outside records are usually fraught with inefficiencies.  The concept behind RHIO is to develop a seamless informatics solution that provides on-demand access of historical medical data between disparate institutions without the existence of a common medical identifier. This session will discuss the RHIO concepts and showcase how a RHIO using IHE profiles will allow sharing of imaging studies between institutions.

Hot Topic Session 3
Friday, June 8
8:00 am - 9:30 am
Ballroom E
PACS/RIS Replacement
Chair:
Richard H. Wiggins, III, MD
University of Utah School of Medicine
Participants:
Richard H. Wiggins, III, MD
University of Utah School of Medicine
Frederick M. Behlen, PhD
Laboratory Automation Inc.
Description: PACS and/or RIS replacement is a daunting undertaking. This session will focus on criteria for deciding on upgrade versus replacement. Strategic alternatives for safe replacement will be presented. Tactical technical issues related to migration of DICOM image data, and PACS and RIS databases will be discussed. The option of replacement by an integrated RIS/PACS will also be examined.

Description: Intellectual property (IP) development is the principal driver of technology innovation throughout health care and is essential to the invention of new technologies and applications driving the digital transformation of medical imaging and informatics. This session will review a number of topics pertinent to IP development from the clinical, engineering, business, and legal perspectives. The topics presented will include: Overview on IP Invention; IP and IT: Past, Present, and Future; Case Study of IP Litigation: Blackberry and RIM; IP Economics and Commercialization; and Practical Guide for IP Wannabes.

Participants:
Krishna Juluru, MD
Johns Hopkins University
George H. Bowers, MBA
Health Care Information Consultants, LLC
Daniel L. Rubin, MD
Stanford University
Description: This session will include three lectures. The first will focus on using advanced imaging and 3-dimensional processing techniques to teach house officers and medical students relevant anatomical concepts. The second will describe a new program for training the Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP). The third will highlight opportunities for more specialized imaging informatics training.

Imaging Informatics in Research (caBIG)
Chair:
Bradley J. Erickson, MD, PhD
Mayo Clinic, Rochester
Participants:

David S. Channin, MD
Northwestern University Medical School
Daniel L. Rubin, MD
Stanford University
Description: The in vivo imaging workspace of caBIG is an NCI-funded effort to advance the involvement of imaging in cancer research, primarily focused on clinical trials. This effort began in September 2005, and has successfully issued contracts for software to assist in image analysis for cancer research. Other activities include advancement of standards, as well as advancing the state of vocabularies and standard data elements for imaging. It has also developed a testbed for demonstration of software and projects.

Hot Topic Session 7
Saturday, June 9
1:15 pm - 2:45 pm
Ballroom E
DICOM Update
Chair:
David A. Clunie, MBBS
RadPharm
Participants:
Robert Horn
Agfa Healthcare
Lawrence R. Tarbox, PhD
