The SIIM 2007 IIP Roadmap focuses on topics and recommended
sessions within the scientific and educational track of the
SIIM 2007 Annual Meeting that are of special interest to
imaging informatics professionals, explore imaging
informatics administration topics in greater depth, and
highlight content relevant to the certification test
outline.

Session 3: PACS/RIS Replacement
Richard
H. Wiggins, III, MD:
Co-chair,
SIIM 2007 Scientific Committee; Associate Professor,
Department of Radiology, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck
Surgery, and Biomedical Informatics, University of Utah
School of Medicine, Salt Lake City, Utah; Director of
Imaging Informatics and Medical PACS Administrator,
University of Utah
The
increasing dependence of radiology departments on technology
with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and
Radiology Information Systems (RIS) has caused departments
to come to terms with the unfortunate potential shelf life
of software, such as with operating systems. The software
life of a PACS and/or RIS is probably about 7 years,
depending on the system, institution, and the integration of
the system in question with other medical systems. There are
now over 2,000 sites with PACS over 2 years old, and these
sites will have a serious issue to solve when they have
outlived their PACS and/or RIS. The migration of the PACS
and RIS databases will be a crucial issue in the second PACS
and RIS purchase of digital institutions. There are many
potential reasons for a system migration, such as outgrowing
a system, lack of standard and specification requirements,
and failure to meet expected financial goals. Having a
clause in both a PACS and RIS RFP and within the final
contract about future database migration is an important
addition, and makes both vendor neutral databases and
combined PACS/RIS databases an attractive option for future
purchases.

Section 10: Enterprise Integration Strategies toward the
Multimedia EHR
Paul J.
Chang, MD:
Professor and Vice-Chairman, Radiology Informatics,
University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine
Medical images must be seamlessly integrated into the
electronic health record (EHR) to realize maximal utility.
This course will explain why, rather than applying a
one-size-fits-all approach, customized software interfaces
and new integration approaches such as Service Oriented
Architecture should be introduced to allow the average
physician to leverage the advantages of digital-based
multimedia.
